Ways to Reduce Distracted Driving Crash Risk

Driving Accidents

It’s no secret that cell phone use can affect a driver’s concentration and even worsen distracted driving accidents. Distracted driving accidents are on the rise and there’s no telling what the next driver will be doing while behind the wheel. This is why you need to know the many ways to reduce distracted driving so you don’t end up in one of these accidents.

In your vehicle, there are several options for distraction prevention. The most important thing you can do is keep distractions to a minimum when you’re in the driver’s seat. You should have a way to control the volume of your cell phone and look at the road ahead.

A lot of companies offer a variety of distraction-disruptive equipment and videos included in the packages they sell, but that’s not enough. There are many things you can do in the line of duty to ensure your employees and drivers remain alert. Some of these fleet safety solutions include:

If you have a lot of employees driving in your company, consider installing a GPS tracking device in all vehicles. This device would keep tabs on all the drivers in your fleet. If an employee used his cell phone to text while driving, this would be considered a distraction and it would show up on the device map. Every time that a cell phone is used, the map would show more crashes and traffic problems in the area.

There are several IITA mechanical schools out there that offer basic automotive skills training for new and returning drivers. This may seem like it’s not necessary, but if a person doesn’t know how to drive properly, how can he learn? This includes using hand signals and vision along with being able to communicate with other drivers. The use of distracting devices like cell phones or handheld computers is strictly prohibited in most driving schools.

In the past, IITA mechanical schools did not report their statistics regarding distracted driving. But, now they have started compiling data and releasing them periodically. Between 2021 there was a significant increase in the number of accidents for cell phone users. The number of fatalities also rose dramatically. The numbers show that there was a significant increase in the two-year period of 2021 compared to the previous two years combined.

There are many studies out there that look at how cell phone technology affects driving. Many of these studies have shown that there is a definite increase in the probability of road crashes involving cell phones and handheld computers. Some of these accidents do happen, but the data shows that there is room for improvement.

One way that we as fleet maintenance professionals can reduce distracted driving is to use IIVS (in-vehicle Interactive Voice Response System). This is a system that allows you to speak to the driver using text messaging if they happen to get distracted. The text messaging works by giving the passenger information about their fuel status, vehicle condition, mileage, etc. The system will

then play a prerecorded message that plays when the driver is distracted. By doing this, you are providing the passenger with important road safety information.

Another great way of reducing cell phone use while driving is to stop using handheld phones or text messaging while behind the wheel. A recent survey showed that almost 80% of people

surveyed believed that they did not need a handheld phone while behind the wheel. This is simply not true. Text messaging and driving go hand in hand and the more you use them, the more your chances of getting into an accident increase. By breaking this habit, you are helping to save the lives of other drivers while saving yourself from a severe financial loss.

Another easy way of reducing distracted driving is to avoid using your cell phone or handheld while you are driving. If you must text or use your handheld phone, try to text or use it only to send brief messages such as “I’m starting my next route”, or “I’m arriving home”. These brief messages will ensure that your focus is only on the road and not on what you are texting or thinking about. You want to concentrate on what is happening out of sight in front of you, rather than what is happening two or three rows over. Text messaging is a distraction that should be avoided at all costs.

Another way you can reduce distractions while driving is to make sure the car you drive is reliable. You may be wondering, “Are Nissan Altimas reliable?” or depending on the make and model of your car you may want to have it routinely maintained and serviced. Flat tires, engine failures all also contribute to distracted driving and accidents.

Reducing the number of distracted driving crashes can be difficult if you do not practice good driving habits. It is up to you to practice defensive driving if you want to decrease your risks of getting into an accident while driving. Defensive driving consists of following the rules of the road and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. You never know when someone may be following too closely and be distracted enough to cause an accident. Driving safely is one of the best ways to reduce distracted driving crashes and keep your family safe.
